Since 2000, our department has been promoting “digital service” and has become a pioneer in the “service learning” education model in Taiwan. Our department’s outstanding performance in promoting service learning has received high recognition from the government and related agencies. We aim to cultivate our students’ communication, coordination, and teamwork skills while expanding their horizons and developing their sense of caring for society.

The Department of Information Management at Chung Yuan Christian University was founded in 1987 by the former president of the university, Dr. Zhang Guang-Zheng, who also served as the first department head. In 1988, Dr. Shao Kong-Ping took over as the second department head and actively promoted the implementation of the graduation thesis system during his six-year tenure, laying a solid foundation for the department’s excellent tradition of balancing practical and theoretical education.

1987

The Department of Information Management was founded in 1987 by Dr. Kuang-Cheng Chang, the former president of the university, who also served as the first department chair. Initially, it had only one class of students and was under the jurisdiction of the College of Business.

1988年

In 1988, the department began to admit two classes per year. In September 1988, the implementation of the graduation thesis system was initiated, which laid the foundation for the department’s excellent tradition of emphasizing both practice and theory.

1996年

In September of 1996, our department actively introduced innovations and adjustments to teaching and counseling, striving to meet the needs of the business environment and grasp the development of information technology, so that all graduates of Chung Yuan Christian University can meet these requirements.

1997年

In November 1997, the department moved to a new building, which was an independent building, to provide better facilities and space to enhance the quality of teaching.

1998年

In September of 1998, the “Master’s Program in Information Management” was established.

1996年

After Dr. Ji Wen Zhang returned to Taiwan from the University of Tennessee as a visiting professor to serve as department head for one year, he actively introduced innovative teaching and counseling methods, striving to ensure that all graduates of the CYCU Department of Information Management could meet the needs of the business environment and keep up with the development of information technology. In 1997, Dr. Shi-Hao Liu took over as department head, adhering to the educational philosophy of “matching talents with suitable positions,” “balancing theory and practice,” and “balancing professional and general education.” In course design, emphasis was placed on participation and practical work, while in student counseling, emphasis was placed on student autonomy and an honor system, both with good results. The graduate institute was approved in 1998, and the in-service master’s program was established in 2000, making the department’s training of high-level information management talent more complete. Additionally, the department pioneered the establishment of the first “Website Management Research Center” in Taiwan, with outstanding achievements in collaborative education and off-campus promotion.

2000年

In September 2000, our department established the “Master’s Program in Information Management for Working Professionals,” which made our cultivation of high-level information management talent even more comprehensive. We also pioneered the first “Website Management Research Center” in Taiwan, which has achieved remarkable results in collaborative education and off-campus promotion. In September 2000, our department began to promote digital services, with a focus on “digital services for elementary schools,” “digital services for aboriginal communities,” and “digital services for society and overseas” as our main directions of effort.

2001年

Dr. Wu Chao-Ming took over as department head and made “enterprise e-transformation” the core development direction, establishing various research centers and laboratories such as the “ERP Research Center,” “CRM Research Center,” “Data Mining Research Center,” “Knowledge Management Research Center,” “Digital Learning Research Center,” and “Cross-platform Information and System Integration Laboratory,” actively enhancing the practical and research capabilities of the department.

Furthermore, Dr. Wu actively developed relationships with universities in mainland China. The department has not only held academic exchange activities with Zhongshan University in Guangzhou, but will also lead teachers and graduate students to Suzhou University in May 2002 to hold a “Cross-Strait e-Transformation Seminar.“

In terms of industry relationships, companies such as Microsoft, HP, III, Digiwin, CTCI, and TSMC have established good relationships with the department through various activities.

2005年

Dr. Shih-Ming Pi has taken over as the department head and is fully committed to the development of “Integrated E-commerce Innovation Applications” and “Digital Services and Care” as the main directions of development. As the department has many well-known research centers, they have become an important resource for teachers and students to continuously conduct research and development, and will also be an important foundation for academic publications in the future. Therefore, the goal of continuously rewarding and subsidizing the development of these research centers will be a continuous effort in the future.

In the past, the department has developed many related project experiences and research topics through cooperation with the business community. These achievements of industry-academia cooperation not only have given the department a good reputation in the industry, but have also made graduates widely acclaimed in the job market. Therefore, the continuous establishment of good examples of industry-academia cooperation is a goal that must be continuously pursued in the future.

In addition, the implementation of digital service projects not only allows students in the department to apply what they have learned to serve society, but also enables them to gain project management and marketing experience, thereby enhancing their competitiveness upon graduation.

2009年

Dr. Chi Yu-Liang has taken over as the head of the department and will continue the department’s outstanding tradition in digital services and caring for vulnerable groups while striving for improvement. In terms of future development, the department will review and strengthen students’ professional skills to enhance their competitiveness in the job market. Additionally, efforts will be made to promote normal development in students’ lives, studies, and morals, fostering the values and principles of “honesty, faithfulness, and action” to enable the students of Chung Yuan’s Department of Information Management to become the cornerstone of society.

2015年

Dr. Hong Chih-Li has taken over as the head of the department, and in addition to continuing the department’s proud tradition of “digital services,” he has also made “virtual and real integration” and “big data analysis” the core development directions. He actively seeks cooperation and information sharing with various industries, governments, and academia on related issues and data, encourages teachers and students to participate in related projects and competitions, and expands the department’s R&D and implementation capabilities in information technology services. He has also established the “Internet of Things (IoT) Creative Base,” “Big Data Certification Center,” “Data Analyst Certification Center,” and “Webduino Certification Center,” and actively promotes the certification of three major programs, “Information System Development,” “E-commerce,” and “Business Intelligence,” while enhancing the department’s practical and logical thinking abilities.

In addition, Dr. Hong actively invites industry instructors in the field of information management to teach at the department, and uses micro-courses to enable students to understand industry trends and mainstreams in a short period of time, enhancing their diverse abilities and helping them find suitable paths in this diverse curriculum. In the industry, Dr. Hong closely integrates with the department’s alumni to promote corporate internships. Companies such as Microsoft, the Institute for Information Industry, Academia Sinica, and Chichen Technology all welcome younger students to join, creating a good reputation for the department in the industry.

2019年

Dr. Hsiu-Li Liao has taken over as the department chair of Information Management at our university. Information Management is a cross-disciplinary field that integrates information technology and business management. It emphasizes the application of information technology, such as programming, network management, and database management, to various fields in order to solve organizational problems in areas such as business, service industries, and manufacturing. Therefore, the department’s selection philosophy expects students to demonstrate diverse learning abilities such as language communication skills, clear reasoning and presentation skills, and mathematical and logical reasoning abilities. Students are also expected to show their confident learning achievements, such as participation in information or other competitions, submission of research papers, or completion of relevant courses. As Information Management emphasizes the integration of professional information, and collaboration with other professional fields such as business management, mechanical engineering, medical care, and finance, the department also values high school students’ extracurricular activities and leadership abilities. As the university upholds the ideals of “holistic education” and “caring for life,” the department’s curriculum also incorporates “service learning.” High school students can participate in relevant activities related to helping others and demonstrating moral character, and exhibit the spirit of “service learning.“

2020年

A new computer classroom has been established with a focus on the IOS operating system, providing students with a convenient and professional space for learning, practical work, and research.

The Department of Information Management at Chung Yuan Christian University firmly believes that every student who enrolls in this department is a unique and exceptional individual. By understanding each student’s different strengths and talents and helping them to realize their full potential, the department strives to cultivate ideal information management professionals.

Promote the integrated research group with enterprise digitization as the core.

  • With the advancement of internet and communication technology, topics such as E-Commerce, E-Business, M-Commerce, Digital Firm, B2B Integration, and Digital Content have become increasingly important to both industry and academia. Building on the foundation of past research, our department will promote an integrated research group centered on “Digital Firm”. In addition to integrating research resources from the Website Management Research Center, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Research Center, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Research Center, and Knowledge Management (KM) Research Center, we will also consolidate research results on Supply Chain Management (SCM), B2B Integration, E-Learning, M-Commerce, and Digital Content to establish the “Digital Enterprise Research Center”. With the active involvement of faculty and students, this center will play a triple role in research, project production, and curriculum development. Through systematic promotion, we believe this center will become an important resource for the exploration of various e-activities in enterprises by both industry and academia in Taiwan.

Providing a practical learning environment of
“learning by doing “.

  • As enterprise competition intensifies, companies have an urgent need for “talent,” and they can no longer afford to wait for new employees to spend a long time learning. Therefore, if schools cannot provide students with a considerable degree of “practical experience” while they are still in school, their competitiveness will be greatly weakened. Based on this trend, our department will comprehensively expand the promotion of “project-based learning” and invite industry professionals to give lectures. In addition, through each research center, we will provide students with rich practical project experience. Furthermore, our department will purchase various related systems in each research center and laboratory, and through the actual construction and demonstration of systems, students will be able to operate them in a practical environment and appreciate what they have learned in class.

We are committed to promoting the spirit of volunteerism through comprehensive implementation of “learning service” and “service learning”.

  • With the rise of utilitarianism, many students are living in a self-centered world and are not inclined to care for those around them who may need help. Our department hopes to cultivate the spirit of volunteerism through promoting “learning service” and “service learning”, allowing students to develop habits of caring for and helping others throughout their four years of university. Through organizing various activities, our department aims to educate and help students appreciate the importance of “service”. We will also make good use of our knowledge and actively promote activities aimed at reducing the “digital divide” and providing services to groups that are behind in “information learning” in Taoyuan County or even throughout Taiwan. By organizing off-campus or camp activities, we aim to instill in students the spirit of “learning service” and “service learning”.

Strengthening Interaction with Industry, Information Policy-making Units, and Mainland Academic Community.

  • To provide students with the latest industry information and government policy updates, our department actively encourages teachers to participate in industry projects or serve on government committees related to information policy. Additionally, we proactively invite industry executives to speak at our department or engage in academic-industry collaborations. These efforts serve to increase our department’s interaction with industry and raise awareness of “Chung Yuan Information Management” among the general public, which can benefit our students’ future employment prospects. Furthermore, with the increasing importance of the Chinese market in the global market, our department will also increase interaction with academic and industry partners in mainland China. In addition to organizing seminars and establishing research groups with mainland universities, we will also promote various teaching and social activities to foster exchange between teachers and students.

Enhancing Department’s Reputation, Image, and Visibility.

  • With the opening of WTO and the diversification of university admission methods, the professional image and reputation of a department have replaced the entrance exam ranking as the reference for students’ enrollment decisions and the intuitive evaluation of a department by the public. Therefore, in addition to participating in various PR activities organized by the university, this department will also actively organize and encourage PR-oriented activities. Additionally, a series of PR materials (including written, video, website, and other media) will be produced for the department’s faculty and students to provide suitable responses in various occasions. Moreover, the achievements of this department’s faculty and students (such as the aforementioned research centers, service activities, exchange programs, teaching and research activities, etc.) will be systematically organized and made available for reference by the wider society. With the active promotion of this department, we hope that both “Chung Yuan University” and “Department of Information Management” can achieve a certain degree of growth in their professional image and reputation.

    SDGs(United Nations Sustainable Development Goals)

圖一、聯合國17項永續發展目標(SDGs)(英文)Comprehensive promotion of the volunteer spirit of “Learning Service, Service Learning”: With the rise of utilitarianism, many students live in a self-centered world and do not pay attention to the people around them who need help. Our department hopes to cultivate the volunteer spirit of “Learning Service, Service Learning” so that students can develop a habit of caring for and assisting others throughout their four years of university. Through organizing activities, our department allows students to learn and appreciate the importance of “service.” We will make good use of what we have learned and actively promote activities to bridge the “digital divide,” providing services to groups in Taoyuan City or throughout Taiwan who are lagging behind in “information learning.” By organizing outings or camps, we aim to instill the volunteer spirit of “Learning Service, Service Learning” in students.

In 2015, the United Nations launched the “2030 Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs), which set out 17 core goals for global governments and businesses to strive for sustainable development. Goal 4 of the SDGs focuses on quality education, ensuring inclusive, equitable, and quality education, and promoting lifelong learning. This spirit aligns with the volunteer spirit of our department.

Following the philosophy of “holistic education” at Chung Yuan Christian University, the curriculum design, service learning, and extracurricular activities of our undergraduate, graduate, and professional master’s programs all aim to cultivate three key abilities in students: “technical skills”, “integration skills”, and “domain adaptation skills”. These abilities form the educational goal of our department in fostering “world-changing leaders”.

Undergraduate program

Compared to other similar departments in other colleges and universities, the Department of Information Management at Chung Yuan Christian University has the following distinctive features in teaching design:

  1. holistic education : emphasizes communication between teachers and students and ethical education, aiming to cultivate information management talents who can truly benefit the society as a whole.
  2. Theoretical and practical balance: emphasizes practical work for students and closely collaborates with the information management industry in course design.
  3. Emphasis on regional characteristics: has a profound understanding of the unique information management needs of businesses in Taiwan and meets the demand for information management talents in domestic enterprises.
  4. Emphasis on professional information integration: strengthens information cooperation with different majors such as business management, healthcare, and agriculture.

Providing a hands-on learning environment of “learning by doing”.

  • The Institute of Information Management at Chung Yuan Christian University firmly believes that each student who enters the institute is a unique individual with distinct talents, and our goal and responsibility is to understand each student’s diverse gifts and assist them in realizing their full potential. Based on this educational mission and philosophy, our program is designed with as much flexibility as possible, emphasizing the balance between “suitable placement based on individual ability,” “theory and practice,” and “professional and general education” in order to meet the diverse needs of our students and society.
  1. Course Design – Emphasizes Fit and Flexible Planning

The master’s program of the Department of Information Management is divided into three categories: technology-oriented, management-oriented, and research-oriented. All students must complete 35 credits to graduate, and also complete a 6-credit master’s thesis, which can be replaced by a technical report. Upon passing the oral defense, students will be awarded a master’s degree.

In the 89 academic year, the Department also officially established a Master’s Continuing Education Program, which has similar courses as the master’s program. However, the graduation credits are reduced to 30 credits (excluding the 6-credit thesis). All students are required to complete a 6-credit master’s thesis, which can also be replaced by a technical report. Upon passing the oral defense, students will be awarded a master’s degree.

2.Teaching design – Emphasis on the balance between theory and practice

The Department of Information Management at Chung Yuan Christian University has always emphasized a balance between theory and practice. Our faculty members possess ample practical experience, and we welcome information management professionals who wish to further their education. Therefore, we established a part-time master’s program starting in the academic year of 2000 to provide more opportunities for working professionals to continue their studies.

In our teaching, we emphasize case studies and role-playing. All applied courses require instructors to include teaching content related to practical cases or hands-on experiences. In addition, elective courses will incorporate practical case studies in information management to enhance students’ practical application of information technology.

Finally, practical-oriented students may choose to write a 6-credit thesis, allowing them to explore more topics in information management theory within the same graduation credit requirement. The thesis topic can be appropriately focused on the integration of theory and practice.

3.Holistic Education – Emphasizing the Balance between Professionalism and General Education

The educational goal of the Institute of Information Management at Chung Yuan Christian University is to cultivate mid-to-high level information management professionals. Therefore, in addition to in-depth expertise, we also emphasize broad knowledge and ethics education. The Institute encourages graduate students to take courses from related departments within the university as elective courses for their professional development. Additionally, to enhance the personal growth of students, the Institute has specially designed an enterprise and ethics seminar as a common elective course for all students.
